Simple Physics Experiments Using Environmentally Friendly Materials Increase Students’ Enthusiasm

Sleman, June 19, 2025 – The Physics Education Study Program, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FITK), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, conducted a community service activity at MTsN 4 Sleman under the theme “Simple Physics Experiments Using Environmentally Friendly Materials.” The activity was organized as a concrete implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in strengthening partnerships and contributing to education at the secondary school level. The program was led by Nira Nurwulandari, M.Pd., a lecturer in Physics Education, together with Azzahra Putri, a student from the program, and was actively attended by seventh- and eighth-grade students of MTsN 4 Sleman.

During the activity, students were introduced to several simple physics experiments using easily accessible and environmentally friendly materials. The experiments included a simple hydraulic bridge, which demonstrates the principle of Pascal’s Law, and an earthquake mitigation model using simple science teaching aids. The hydraulic bridge model was primarily constructed using ice cream sticks and cardboard, while the earthquake mitigation model used styrofoam and cardboard materials.

Students were given the opportunity to directly participate in and try each experiment. They showed great enthusiasm and actively engaged in discussions throughout the activity. One student shared their impression, stating, “Learning science becomes more enjoyable because we can directly try the experiments ourselves. It helps us understand the concepts better and makes learning less boring.”

The supervising lecturer, Nira Nurwulandari, expressed her hope that this activity would inspire science teachers to develop experiment-based learning approaches that are engaging, educational, and contextual. She emphasized that science can be taught in enjoyable ways without requiring expensive equipment. Students can understand major scientific concepts through simple tools that they build themselves.

Documentation of the activity reflects a strong spirit of collaboration among students, lecturers, teachers, and university students. Photographs from the event show participants proudly presenting their projects, such as the hydraulic bridge model and the earthquake mitigation teaching aid, and taking group photos with the community service team in a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere.
