Inclusive Earthquake Mitigation Education through Simple Science Learning Media at MTsN 4 Sleman

Sleman, June 19, 2025 – Lecturers and students from the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) at MTsN 4 Sleman under the theme “Inclusive Earthquake Mitigation Education through Simple Science Teaching Aids.” This activity represents part of the university’s implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, emphasizing the contextual and practical application of physics knowledge in society.

The activity involved Iva Nandya Atika, M.Ed., a lecturer in Physics Education, together with Azzahra Saharani Putri, a student from the 2024 cohort. Their collaboration integrated disaster literacy, science education, and inclusive learning approaches. The program was conducted on Thursday, June 19, 2025, with active participation from eighth-grade students of MTsN 4 Sleman.

The program began with a presentation on the fundamentals of earthquakes, earthquake-prone regions in Indonesia, and the importance of disaster mitigation awareness within school communities. The material was delivered through visual and interactive methods, taking into account the diverse learning needs of students as part of an inclusive science education approach.

The activity continued with a demonstration and hands-on practice in constructing a simple earthquake detection device using everyday materials. The device illustrated the basic working principles of a mini seismograph, based on the concepts of vibration and inertia. Through this experiment, students were able to understand how earthquake movements can be physically and visually detected through the motion patterns produced by the device. As part of disaster literacy education, the program also included a simple classroom simulation of earthquake mitigation procedures. Students were introduced to emergency response actions such as seeking safe shelter, avoiding hazardous objects, and remaining calm during seismic events.

This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and equitable learning opportunities; SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which emphasizes disaster risk reduction in vulnerable areas; and SDG 13 (Climate Action), which highlights the importance of strengthening adaptive capacity to natural disasters. Through contextual science education and hands-on practice, students not only learned physics concepts but also developed practical skills and awareness related to disaster mitigation relevant to contemporary global challenges.

This program represents a tangible contribution of the Physics Education academic community of UIN Sunan Kalijaga in disseminating practical and socially beneficial physics knowledge. The collaboration between lecturers and students also reinforces the role of higher education institutions in fostering a culture of disaster preparedness from an early age within school communities.
