Integrating Ethnoscience and STEAM, the Physics Education Study Program Trains SMATQ Teachers in Scientific Writing

Boyolali, Central Java — Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The Physics Education Study Program conducted a Community Service Program (PKM) at SMATQ and SMATQ ABI-UMMI Boyolali under the theme “Training and Mentoring for High School Teachers in Scientific Publication.” This activity aimed to strengthen teachers’ research culture and scientific publication practices through structured training and mentoring in writing journal articles.

The PKM featured Dr. Ika Kartika, M.Pd.Si., a lecturer from the Physics Education Study Program, who delivered materials on the importance of scientific publication, steps in designing classroom-based research, techniques for writing articles according to journal templates, as well as strategies for submitting manuscripts and responding to reviewers. The participants consisted of teachers from SMATQ and SMATQ ABI-UMMI Boyolali from various subject areas, including Physics, Chemistry, English, Indonesian, Guidance and Counseling, and other disciplines.

During the mentoring sessions, the speaker emphasized the importance of contextual and innovative educational research by integrating ethnoscience (local wisdom as a learning context) with the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through project- and product-based learning. Teachers were guided to identify real classroom learning problems, develop research designs or Classroom Action Research (CAR), and produce draft scientific articles. The integration of ethnoscience and STEAM, guided by Dr. Ika Kartika, M.Pd.Si., is expected to enrich teachers’ research designs, making them more innovative, contextual, and directly impactful on the quality of classroom learning.

The activity was conducted in an interactive atmosphere and received positive responses from both participants and the school management. As an initial outcome, the teachers produced draft scientific articles, which will be followed by periodic mentoring sessions until they are ready to be submitted to academic journals. The Physics Education Study Program hopes that this program will encourage teachers to become more productive in writing and publishing innovative learning practices, contributing to the improvement of educational quality in schools. Furthermore, the program is expected to stimulate the development of a sustainable culture of scientific publication in partner schools, while strengthening academic collaboration between lecturers and teachers to advance physics and science education in the future.
