Utilizing the Phyphox Application as an Alternative Media for Physics Learning at MAN 2 Magelang

On July 24, 2024, a community service team from the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta visited MAN 2 Magelang. The team consisted of Himawan Putranta, M.Pd., Drs. Nur Untoro, M.Si., Rachmad Resmiyanto, M.Sc., and Nira Nurwulandari, M.Pd. The visit was conducted under the theme “Utilizing the Phyphox Application as an Alternative Medium for Physics Learning.” The team was warmly welcomed by the school principal and teachers, who expressed their enthusiasm for gaining new insights into the use of the Phyphox application in physics learning. The application is expected to serve as an innovative and effective alternative learning medium for students at MAN 2 Magelang.

The activity began with welcoming remarks from the principal of MAN 2 Magelang, who expressed his appreciation for the visit from the community service team of the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. In his speech, the principal conveyed his gratitude and hope that the activity would provide significant benefits for the students. He also emphasized his enthusiasm for the collaboration, expressing his expectation that the knowledge and skills brought by the team would enrich the process of physics learning at the school. “We are very grateful and enthusiastic about the visit from the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. We hope this activity will provide great benefits for our students,” he stated.

Following the opening remarks, the program continued with a motivational session aimed at encouraging students’ enthusiasm for learning. In this session, lecturers and students shared insights on the importance of education as an investment in civilization, particularly in the field of physics. They emphasized that a deep understanding of physics is not only essential for academic success but also for future technological and scientific advancement. Students were also encouraged to develop clear aspirations, such as becoming physics educators who can contribute meaningfully to society. The motivational session was accompanied by educational physics games, which created a more engaging and interactive atmosphere. These activities not only entertained students but also reinforced physics concepts, allowing them to learn in a more enjoyable and effective way.

The next session introduced the Phyphox application as an alternative physics learning medium. Students were invited to explore physics concepts found in everyday life and apply them using the Phyphox application, which can be freely downloaded on smartphones. Through this application, students were able to measure and analyze physical quantities related to various physical phenomena. The students showed great enthusiasm during this session, eagerly experimenting with the application and asking many questions about the concepts and simulations presented. One student, Fadil, expressed his excitement: “This is very helpful! I can measure the noise level in the room and observe resonance phenomena. It makes physics much easier to understand.”

At the end of the activity, the management of MAN 2 Magelang expressed their hope to establish further cooperation and follow-up activities with the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. “We hope to collaborate again in various positive activities in the future. Activities like this are very beneficial for the development of education at our school,” said one of the teachers.

Through this initiative, it is expected that students of MAN 2 Magelang will become more motivated and interested in learning physics, while also learning how to utilize smartphone applications as alternative media for physics education. This community service activity also represents a tangible contribution of the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in advancing education within the community.
