AI and Assessment Innovation for the Digital Generation: New Competencies for Future Teachers
Documentation of the International Webinar on Empowering Future Educators with AI-Driven Descriptive Assessment Tools
The Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics Education Study Programs, in collaboration with the Student Affairs and Cooperation Division of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FITK), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, organized an international seminar entitled “Empowering Future Education with AI-driven Descriptive Assessment Tools” on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The seminar was conducted online via Zoom Meeting.
The event featured an international speaker, Prof. Minsu Ha, Ph.D. from Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea, who presented recent developments in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for descriptive assessment systems. The seminar particularly highlighted the implementation of the Smart Automated Assessment Interface (SAAI), a system capable of automatically and rapidly analyzing and evaluating students’ open-ended responses without requiring time-consuming manual grading.
For the Indonesian education system, particularly within the context of the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes competency-based learning and authentic assessment, the theme of this seminar is highly relevant. Future teachers and educators are expected not only to master subject content but also to develop adaptive, fair, and effective assessment strategies. With the increasing number of students and the growing complexity of learning outcomes, technological innovations such as AI-based assessment tools can offer solutions to support personalized learning and enhance teachers’ efficiency.
The seminar was attended by more than one hundred participants, including students, lecturers, and education practitioners. Participants gained valuable insights into the potential use of AI technologies, such as integrating ChatGPT to generate automated feedback on students’ responses, while also understanding the limitations and considerations that must be addressed when implementing such technologies within the diverse classroom contexts of Indonesia.
Through this seminar, the Physics Education Study Program reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the capacity of future teachers to face the challenges of technological transformation in education, while also promoting international collaboration in developing data-driven and AI-based educational innovations.
