Community Service by the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga at MTsN 9 Bantul: From Physics to Endless Possibilities
Community Service Program of Physics Education Study Program, UIN Sunan Kalijaga at MTs 9 Bantul
Bantul, June 19, 2025 – The Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta conducted a community service activity at MTsN 9 Bantul on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The activity, under the main theme “From Physics to Endless Possibilities,” involved several experienced lecturers, namely Murtono, Winarti, Rachmad Resmiyanto, and Norma Sidik Risdiyanto, accompanied by two students, Fitri Yanti and Dimas Ergi Pranandana.
The program was designed to introduce students to various fascinating aspects of physics through approaches that are relevant and easy to understand. Each lecturer delivered a presentation with a different subtheme. Murtono presented “What Can Be Done with Physics?”, encouraging students to explore the role of physics in everyday life. Rachmad Resmiyanto discussed “What Can Physics Do?”, highlighting practical applications of physics in various fields. Norma Sidik Risdiyanto offered a unique perspective through the topic “Physics in Anime,” connecting physics concepts with entertainment media popular among teenagers. Meanwhile, Winarti presented “Physics and Technology,” demonstrating how physics forms the foundation of modern technological development.
In addition to the lecture sessions, the activity also featured demonstrations of simple science teaching aids. Two demonstrations attracted particular attention: a water filtration device, illustrating the application of physics principles in clean water processing, and a hologram demonstration tool, which introduced optical concepts in an interactive way. These teaching aids were not only demonstrated but were also handed over to the school to support science learning at MTsN 9 Bantul.
Fitri Yanti and Dimas Ergi Pranandana, students of the Physics Education Study Program, played an active role as facilitators by helping explain physics concepts in a simple and accessible manner. Their presence created a dynamic and friendly learning atmosphere, encouraging students to ask questions and engage in discussions more comfortably.
The head of MTsN 9 Bantul expressed appreciation for the activity, noting that it was not only educational but also inspiring for students to view physics as an enjoyable and useful field of knowledge. “We hope that collaborations like this can continue to enrich our students’ learning experiences,” he stated.
This activity demonstrated that physics is not an abstract discipline but one that can be applied in many contexts, ranging from technology to entertainment. Through this community service initiative, the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga successfully fostered enthusiasm for science learning among younger students.
