From Science to Real Action: Collaboration between Lecturers and Students Brings STEAM Project Innovation to Support the SDGs at MTsN 4 Sleman
Collaboration between Physics Education Lecturers and Students Presents an Innovative STEAM Project at MTsN 4 Sleman
Sleman, June 19, 2025 — The Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga once again carried out an inspiring and practical Community Service Program (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PkM). The activity, titled “Making Science Fun: Creative Innovation of STEAM-Based Projects in Integrated Science Learning,” was held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at MTsN 4 Sleman and involved students from the junior secondary school level.
The program was led by Puspo Rohmi, M.Pd., a lecturer from the Physics Education Study Program, in collaboration with a student, Syahirul Alim. The activity aimed to introduce the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) approach through hands-on projects that integrate creativity with scientific concepts.
During the activity, the student demonstrated a STEAM project in the form of a simple hydraulic bridge, which applies the principles of Pascal’s Law. Through this demonstration, students were introduced to how fluid pressure can be utilized to lift loads in hydraulic systems—an application commonly found in everyday technologies such as hydraulic jacks, hydraulic brakes, and heavy machinery.
This activity also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and high-quality learning opportunities, and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), which emphasizes the development of sustainable technology and infrastructure. Through project-based STEAM learning, students not only gain scientific knowledge but also develop essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving to address future challenges.
“The hydraulic bridge project is not only visually engaging but also highly effective in explaining science concepts that are often perceived as difficult,” explained Puspo Rohmi in her remarks. She also emphasized the importance of contextual and enjoyable science learning to help students better understand the material and remain motivated to learn.
Students of MTsN 4 Sleman showed great enthusiasm throughout the activity. They had the opportunity to directly interact with the hydraulic system demonstration and discuss the real-world applications of scientific concepts in daily life. The school highly appreciated the initiative and expressed hope that collaboration with UIN Sunan Kalijaga would continue in the future. “Activities like this make students more enthusiastic about learning science because the material is delivered in an engaging and practical way,” said Ricki Armando Putra, M.Pd., one of the science teachers at MTsN 4 Sleman.
This program represents a tangible contribution of the Physics Education Study Program in bringing science closer to students’ everyday experiences, while also providing opportunities for university students to develop their skills through involvement in community service activities based on education and sustainable innovation.
