Science in Balance: The Excitement of STEM Training on Object Equilibrium at SMATQ Abi-Ummi
STEM Training "Science in Balance" by Puspo Rohmi, M.Pd.
Boyolali, November 19, 2025 — The Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga once again carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) as a tangible contribution to improving science literacy in partner schools. The activity was conducted by Puspo Rohmi, M.Pd., together with students Titi Dwi Kusuma and Al Ansyar Dwi Putra, and was attended by female students of Class X C at SMATQ Abi-Ummi Boyolali.
Carrying the theme “Science in Balance: STEM Training Based on the Concept of Object Equilibrium,” the training session presented a form of science learning that was practical, creative, and enjoyable. The primary focus of the activity was to help students understand the concepts of center of mass, center of gravity, and object equilibrium through a STEM-based approach.
During the practical session, the students were invited to create a mini STEM project called “balance toys” using simple materials such as toothpicks and plasticine. Through this project, they learned how to determine the center of mass, test structural stability, and modify their designs so that the toys remained balanced. The classroom atmosphere became lively as students discussed ideas with one another, experimented with various models, and tested whether their “balance toys” could stand steadily. Although simple, this exploratory activity provided students with a direct experience of how physics concepts operate in everyday life.
The students demonstrated great enthusiasm and enjoyed every stage of the activity. During the reflection session, several students shared interesting testimonials. They admitted that physics was not as intimidating as they had previously imagined. Through the enjoyable STEM project, they realized that physics is closely related to daily life and becomes easier to understand when practiced directly. One student commented, “It turns out that learning physics is really fun. By making balance toys like this, we can understand what equilibrium means. It’s exciting and not stressful at all!”
Puspo Rohmi, M.Pd. explained that project-based learning activities like this are essential for fostering curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration—four key competencies of the 21st century that are highly relevant to modern science education. Meanwhile, the involvement of university students in the PkM activity served as a real learning space for developing teaching skills, scientific communication, and leadership within the school context.
The management of SMATQ Abi-Ummi welcomed the activity and expressed hope that similar collaborations could continue in the future. The training not only broadened the students’ scientific insights but also motivated them to realize that physics is actually very close to everyday life and can be explored through simple and enjoyable activities.
Through this program, the Physics Education Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga once again reaffirmed its role as an academic program that actively builds partnerships and empowers communities through impactful educational initiatives.
