Drs. Nur Untoro, M.Si. Secures a Patent for an Anti-Rollback Disc Brake for Vehicles on Uphill Roads
Drs. Nur Untoro, M.Si.
Yogyakarta – Drs. Nur Untoro, M.Si., a lecturer in the Physics Education Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, has successfully secured a patent for a vehicle technology innovation titled the Anti-Rollback Disc Brake. The innovation is designed to help drivers prevent vehicles from rolling backward when stopping and starting on uphill roads.
The invention originated from a common problem faced by drivers, particularly those operating manual transmission vehicles, when dealing with stop-and-go traffic on inclines. Drivers must coordinate the movement of their right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator while gradually releasing the clutch. Inaccurate coordination between engine power, clutch engagement, and braking may cause the vehicle to roll backward or move abruptly.
Through the Anti-Rollback Disc Brake innovation, Nur Untoro developed a locking mechanism integrated into the vehicle’s disc brake system. Its operating principle was inspired by the freewheel mechanism found on bicycle rear wheels, which allows rotation in one direction while resisting movement in the opposite direction.
In this design, the brake disc is modified with sawtooth-shaped gear teeth. The component is combined with a locking anchor, or pawl, mounted on the brake caliper. When the anti-rollback system is activated, the pawl engages with the teeth on the disc and locks the wheel against backward rotation. However, the wheel can still rotate normally in the forward direction.
The system is activated and deactivated through an electromagnetic actuator, or solenoid. Under certain conditions, the solenoid moves a locking pin to control the position of the pawl relative to the disc teeth. This mechanism allows drivers to activate the anti-rollback function when travelling on uphill roads and deactivate it once the vehicle reaches a flat road.
The innovation offers a simpler approach than the Hill Start Assist Control system, which generally relies on multiple sensors and electronic processing. The Anti-Rollback Disc Brake is designed as a safe, practical, reliable, and potentially more affordable solution.
This system can assist drivers when stopping on inclines, particularly in heavy traffic conditions. Once the vehicle has stopped and the locking mechanism is active, the driver can resume driving more confidently without worrying that the vehicle will roll backward. As a result, the risk of collision with vehicles behind can be reduced.
The patent for the Anti-Rollback Disc Brake demonstrates the contribution of a Physics Education lecturer at UIN Sunan Kalijaga in developing an innovation that connects principles of physics, mechanical engineering, and transportation safety needs. The invention also reflects how university-based research can produce applicable solutions to everyday problems in society.
In the future, the innovation may be further developed through prototype production, technical testing, safety evaluation, and collaboration with automotive industry partners. These steps are important to refine the Anti-Rollback Disc Brake technology and expand its benefits for vehicle users in Indonesia.
